WhatsApp Ends Support for Older iPhones Starting May 2025

Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer function on several older iPhone models. The messaging platform has announced that it will only support devices running iOS 15.1 or later, leaving out popular models such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, users of these outdated devices have already begun receiving notifications alerting them to the upcoming end of support. To continue using WhatsApp, they will be required to upgrade to a newer iPhone model.

Until now, WhatsApp has supported iPhones running iOS 12 and above. However, the upcoming change is reportedly linked to the platform’s adoption of new APIs, which are no longer compatible with older operating systems. This update has already been reflected on WhatsApp’s official support page.

While the decision might be technically necessary, it has caught many users off guard. A glance at discussions on “X” (formerly Twitter) reveals growing concern and frustration.

One user remarked, “This is going to hit some people hard, especially in countries where technology is expensive and people can’t afford new phones.” Another wrote, “Wow, my iPhone 6 is basically useless now!”

For users looking to leave WhatsApp behind altogether, a German-made alternative is now available. This app claims to prioritize user privacy and security, offering a potentially appealing option for those seeking more control over their data.

As mobile technology continues to evolve rapidly, users of aging devices may find themselves increasingly excluded from essential apps — a trend that highlights the growing digital divide and the pressure to constantly upgrade.
